The observation tower (also known as sightseeing tower or lookout tower) is a type of tall building that primarily serves the function of providing panoramic views from a high position. It is often used as a scenic spot or a city landmark, and has various purposes such as tourism, leisure, communication, and even weather monitoring.

Development and Classification

Historical Origin: In ancient times, they were mostly military lookout towers (such as beacon towers, castle arrow towers); in modern times, they have been transformed into civilian sightseeing towers. The Eiffel Tower in 1889 was the symbolic beginning of modern sightseeing towers.

Main Types

Independent Sightseeing Tower (purely for viewing, such as the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Skytree);

Composite Function Tower (combining broadcasting, catering, entertainment, etc., such as Guangzhou Tower, Auckland Sky Tower);

Natural Scenic Area Tower (based on mountains / lakes, such as the Tea Card Salt Lake Scenic Area Tower);

Simple Forest / Fire Warning Tower (practical type, mostly made of steel structure).

Structure and Facilities: Modern construction often uses steel structures and concrete, equipped with high-speed elevators, fully enclosed / open viewing platforms, rotating restaurants, glass walkways, night lighting; heights range from several tens of meters to several hundred meters.
